Il film è ispirato al documentario omonimo del 2005 di Rachel Boynton, incentrato sulle strategie politiche adottate per la campagna in Bolivia degli ex consulenti del presidente Clinton, James Carville e Stan Greenberg. Sandra Bullock interpreta "Calamity" Jane Bodine, ex consulente politica americana coinvolta in uno scandalo che torna al suo lavoro richiamata da un candidato alla presidenza in Bolivia nonché dal desiderio di battere la sue nemesi di sempre Pat Candy (interpretato da Billy Bob Thornton) ingaggiato dal candidato rivale.
