Cambogia, 1975. Il partito degli Khmer Rossi - nati come costola dell’esercito popolare del Vietnam del Nord - prende brutalmente il potere nel paese, evacuando le città ritenute “corrotte” e costringendo i cittadini a riorganizzarsi nelle campagne, nel nome di una furia purificatrice che mira all’autosufficienza politica, economica, e sanitaria del paese. Tra i tanti deportati ci sono anche i giovani Chou e Khoun, che durante la fuga dalla città di Phnom Penh vengono separati dal figlio Sovanh. Costretti a lavorare in un campo sotto la supervisione di un cugino, da poco convertitosi all’ideologia Khmer, la loro ragione di vita diventa ritrovare il bambino.
