Siamo nel 1949 a Santa Rosa in California. Ed Crane è barbiere triste, senza nessuna prospettiva. Sospetta che la moglie Doris abbia una relazione. Per reagire in qualche modo decide di investire denaro nel nuovo business del lavaggio a secco. Estorce quindi la somma di 10.000 dollari all'amico Dave, che poi è l'amante della moglie e, in un raptus, lo uccide.
