La serie si concentra sulla vita quotidiana di un gruppo di tassisti di New York e su Louie De Palma, il direttore della Sunshine Cab Company, la compagnia di taxi. Fra i tassisti, solo Alex Rieger, deluso dalla vita, considera quella di tassista la sua professione. Gli altri lo vedono come un lavoro temporaneo che possono lasciarsi alle spalle non appena avranno successo nella carriera che ognuno di loro ha come obiettivo. Elaine Nardo è una receptionist presso una galleria d'arte. Tony Banta è un pugile con un record da perdente. Bobby Wheeler è un attore in difficoltà. Tutti cercano di aiutare "Reverend Jim" Ignatowski, un ex hippy bruciato dalla droga, a diventare un tassista.
Jim invites Elaine to a concert, and while there, they run into an important patron at Elaine's art gallery. The woman invites them both to a party, although Elaine is very worried that Jim will embarrass her in an event that's important to her career. Still, she doesn't quite have it in her to ask Jim not to go. At the party, Elaine's worst fears are realized with Jim's behavior, until he surprisingly wows the crowd on the piano and turns things around.
